The Hot Wheels of Tut and Nero
Friday, February 19 at 1:30 p.m

The King Tut class chariots were the earliest high-performance machines, starting about 1500 B.C. The existing eight complete Tut chariots and a unique wheel fragment are the basis for analyzing and understanding all ancient chariots. In several categories, the Tut-chariot is superior to classic cars, such as the 1916 Oldsmobile. This presentation covers relevant art and insights of the 1959 Ben-Hur movie and NOVA’s 2013 documentary “Building Pharaoh’s Chariot.” It culminates in a view of the Roman racing world, where competing teams, and the Emperor Nero, faced a new dilemma: Should the best racing machines have iron tires?

Bela Sandor (Professor Emeritus of Engineering Physics College of Engineering at UW-Madison) has worked for Bell Telephone Laboratories, the Lockheed Palo Alto Research Laboratory and has served as a Guest Professor at Osaka University and a Research Fellow of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. Dr. Sandor also served as the technical expert for the 2103 NOVA documentary.
